Like the planet upon which we reside, our bodies are made up of five elements, these are Air, Fire, Earth, Ether and Water. These elements can function effectively together, only when they are in the correct proportions… a simple example, our world is 70% water, as are our bodies…when the water element becomes scare or too abundant, then it knocks the balance of the elements out of kilter, in turn having knock on negative effects that can manifest themselves in forms of disease and other ailments…think about the world and the effect of climate change…
with too much water resulting in rising sea levels which would have dire consequences…
exactly this can happen in our bodies. It is the goal of Ayurveda to keep the elements in the perfect balance.
Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word that translates in English to “Life (Ayur) Knowledge (Veda)”. The Merriam-Webster dictionary perfectly encapsulates the definition of Ayurveda as
“…the traditional system of medicine of India, that preceded and evolved independently of Western medicine, and that seeks to treat and integrate body, mind, and spirit using a comprehensive holistic approach especially by emphasizing diet, herbal remedies, exercise (yoga), meditation, breathing, and physical therapy.”
