Pain Is Inevitable, Suffering Is Optional.

We all get tired, we overuse or misuse parts of our body because we are running too much meaning the knees hurt, look down at our phones constantly and get a stiff neck, don’t get enough sleep leading to burning eyes, get lazy when it comes to posture and back problems ensue. These and many more similar issues are commonplace in our world today. Remedying them may sound as easy as taking a pill or injection, but by doing that we are only ever treating the symptom and not the cause.
Basti treatments are an age old Ayurvedic recipe for addressing and rejuvenating damaged and worn body areas and target the root of the issues … here we discuss 5 types of Basti treatments and offer short explanations of how they work.
Shiro Basti
In Shiro Basti, the term Shiro refers to the head. Medicated herbal oils are pooled over the head in an enclosure that looks like a crown. Then, you rest steadily in the same position for a period. During this time, the medicated liquids penetrate through your skin and help in the pacification of the Doshas in the head region.
Shiro Basti is often found beneficial in the management of stress-related disorders, Vata-Pitta diseases of the head, headache, baldness, premature greying of hair, hair fall, insomnia etc. Performing Shiro Basti can help in the optimum functioning of the brain and can also prevent many neurological disorders over time.
Netra Basti
Ayurveda has given much importance to our senses and visual sense is one of them. In Ayurveda, ‘Netra’ means eyes. ‘Netra Basti’, is an Ayurvedic treatment in which medicated oils and liquids are pooled over both of your eyes. This helps in the pacification of Vata Dosha and increases eye longevity.
Netra Basti is an excellent eye relaxing and rejuvenating treatment that helps to nourish your eyes, increases blood circulation, strengthens eye muscles, pacifies vitiated Doshas and improves eyesight. Those with an excessive amount of screen exposure will benefit with this Basti to relax their eye muscles
Greeva Basti
In Greeva Basti, medicated oils and liquids are poured over your neck region in a compartment constructed with dough. It is the most utilized treatment for neck disorders in Ayurveda. It pacifies the vitiated doshas in the neck region and helps in relieving the neck pain.
Most of us don’t know that our neck muscles are constantly under stress while we are working. They need some time to relax too! Ayurveda has its solution, performing Greeva Basti can help to relax and rejuvenate the neck muscles by increasing the blood circulation to the neck region. Moreover, Greeva Basti is also found to be helpful in enhancing the flexibility of the neck, reducing swelling, tenderness, and movement restrictions.
Kati Basti
Kati Basti is the treatment in which medicated oils are poured on the lower back region of the body in a compartment constructed with dough. The medicated liquids that are pooled over the lower back region penetrate through the skin and pacify the Vata Dosha which is the key culprit behind back pain.
This type of Basti is beneficial for those who spend significant time sitting in front of screens or in the same arched position or simply suffer with back pain for other reasons. Performing Kati Basti can help to soothe pain, relieve stiffness, and strengthen the lower back and limbs. It can also help in preventing some of the major disorders such as Sciatica, Spondolysis, Arthritis etc.
Janu Basti
Janu Basti is the most effective and time-tested therapy for the management of acute knee pain in Ayurveda. Just like other Basti therapies, a compartment for retaining the medicated oil or liquid is constructed over the Knee region and medicated liquids are pooled over the knee region for an optimal period of time.
It is found highly effective in the treatment of osteoarthritis and knee pain related issues. It can nourish the knee joint and can enhance the lubrication between the bones. Performing Janu Basti regularly can prevent a majority of age-related knee problems.
