Breathe Easy: 8 Remedies For Asthma Relief

Chronic Asthma and Ayurveda: 8 Remedies to Breathe Easy Again

Chronic asthma is more than just a recurring cough or breathlessness—it’s a daily challenge that impacts sleep, energy, and quality of life. Ayurveda offers a gentle yet powerful perspective on asthma, focusing on treating the root causes and restoring balance to the body. Rather than suppressing symptoms, Ayurvedic care works to strengthen respiratory health, improve digestion, and calm the mind.

In Ayurveda, chronic asthma (Tamaka Shwasa) is typically caused by an imbalance of Vata and Kapha doshas, sometimes with underlying Pitta aggravation. This leads to obstructed airways, excess mucus, and breathing difficulty. Digestive weakness (mandagni) is often at the root, allowing toxins (ama) to accumulate and lodge in the respiratory channels (pranavaha srotas).

Ayurvedic Dosha Insight for Asthma

Vata-Type Asthma: Dry cough, wheezing, anxiety, worse at night. Needs grounding, nourishing therapies like warm oils and calming herbs.

Pitta-Type Asthma: Inflammation, burning in chest, irritability. Needs cooling herbs like licorice, coriander, and gentle pranayama.

Kapha-Type Asthma: Mucus congestion, heaviness in chest, lethargy. Needs warming, drying, and stimulating therapies.
